"You'll never believe what I did today, Em!" Y/N squealed to her best friend through the phone. Phone calls with Emma were the best Y/N could do as she lived in Monaco with her boyfriend, Alex, while she lived in Milton Keynes. Y/N struggled to contain the smile on her face, and her was almost shaking with excitement, "You're taking too long, I'm just going to tell you."
"I didn't realise I had to guess!" Emma laughed
"Whatever, so I bought a dog." The line went silent and Y/N lifted the phone away from her ear to check if she had lost connection, "Hello?"
"Did you actually?" Emma wheezed through the phone before bursting into a fit of laughter. "Why are you laughing?" Y/N asked confusedly. Y/N had thought that this was a great idea as she couldn't always attend each race weekend and so she got lonely – what better way to combat loneliness than with a dog. "Don't take this the wrong way-"
"That means this will offend me." Y/N said with a humph.
"Now, being honest, I find the idea of you caring for a dog to be the most hilarious thought ever."
"Don't be such a bitch! I'm picking him up tomorrow."
"Out of interest ... where are you getting him from?" Emma asked, intrigue and a ounce of worry etched in her voice. "This family put a poster up in shop nearby. Their dog had puppies and they need a home for them. I'll send you a picture of him." Emma let out an 'aww' as the photo came through on WhatsApp. It was a gorgeous Golden Retriever.
"What are you going to call him?"
"I have no idea; I'll be googling all night. I was racing around Monaco this afternoon trying to buy everything he'd need. I didn't realise how much dogs actually need!" Y/N said in amazement. "Thank goodness Alex isn't home until Wednesday." She said with a sigh of relief. Emma's eyes widened astronomically as she understood what Y/N just said, "Alex doesn't know?"
"No." Emma eyes blinked slowly as if in shock. Sometimes she really didn't know what went through her best friend's mind. "I'm gonna have to go, Emma. I'm picking him up pretty early tomorrow. Bye, love you!" Emma responded much the same and hung up. Her eyes where still wide as she tried to understand what crossed Y/N mind to get a dog without consulting Alex. Emma glanced at her phone, still in her hand, and she knew she had to let Alex know what Y/N was doing because he'd be even more annoyed if he got home to a dog in his apartment that he didn't know about.
Y/N woke up the next morning with a bright smile on her face. She was getting a puppy today. She'd had dogs when she was younger but now finally, she was able to get one of her own. She had stayed awake until the early hours trying to think of suitable names but inevitably decided it would be best to wait until she got him home. With a bounce in her step she left to collect the new member of the Y/L/N-Albon family.
"Here we are sweetie. Home sweet home." Y/N said unlocking the door and stepping into their apartment, however, she jumped in fright as she took in the sight of her boyfriend sitting on the settee in clear view of the door with a quirked eyebrow as he took in the sight of his girlfriend holding a dog. "Alex! Hi" She said timidly holding the puppy in her arms tightly. "Bought a dog." She held the dog up a bit higher in her arms and bobbed her head up and down.
Alex stood up with a shake of his head and he strolled towards Y/N and towered above her. Usually Y/N loved that Alex was much taller than her but in times like this she wished she was taller than him. "Why? Who's going to look after him when we're at the races?"
"He'll come with us!" Y/N protested, "It gets really lonely here. Everyone I know in Monaco is at the races so when I have to stay here alone, I get really lonely." Alex let out a sigh and petted the dog's head before wrapping his arms around the two of them, only breaking apart when the dog began to scratch at his clothes. "He's called Fred." She mumbled into his chest. Alex pushed her back as he eyed her as if trying to see if she was being serious.
"Fred? You've named him Fred?"
"It's perfect for him." She smiled causing Alex to smile in return. "Next time, I'll make sure I consult you before getting one."
"Next time? Next time! There isn't going to be a next time. We're only having this one!" Alex laughed.
