"Louis!"

Louis' heart skipped a beat as he sat up. Usually when Harry yelled his name he came running, but this time was different. Even while growing up and getting into trouble he didn't think he'd ever heard his name screamed quite so frighteningly.

He'd heard the heartbreak in Harry's voice which worried him, but the more definitive anger terrified Louis. Harry was furious at him.

The air thickened as the door crashed back into the wall and Harry stomped into the backyard. Louis caught a glimpse of Harry's face and dropped his book to the floor, scrambling out of his chair and instinctively raising his hands in front of him.

Tears streamed uncontrollably down his lover's face and his whole body was shaking. The fire blazing in his eyes flickered and roared.

"Been quiet around the place this past hour?" Harry growled, sounding as if he was barely containing himself. Louis flinched and swallowed hard, "no, I- Haz, tell me what's wrong. You're upset-"
"No Louis! Tell me if it's been quiet! If you even fucking realised!" Harry shouted. With the pressure he was under Louis couldn't think clearly. He stuttered over a few words and then threw his hands up, "I didn't notice!"

"What? No absence of a specific household pet?" Harry said scornfully, wiping the tears off his cheeks.
"Hope?" Louis blurted, confused.
"No, another random fucking dog!" Harry snarled sarcastically. Louis stepped back and out of the splash zone. He searched around the yard for the familiar ball of black and white fur. His mind was ticking over everything Harry had been screaming at him, slowly putting the pieces together, and the conclusion he was getting to was making his eyes prick with hot tears.

The last place he'd seen Hope was her armchair, under the sun umbrella. Now it was empty, covered in dog fur but no dog.

"She's out front if you want to go see her," Harry shrugged, his bottom lip trembling, "she's on the road, the neighbours were nice enough to offer to take care of her so that we didn't have to but I think you should see what you did."

"Wh-what I did?" Louis repeated. He closed his eyes and hoped that Harry's words didn't confirm the awful idea he had. It was the only thing that made sense, the only thing that would make Harry this destroyed, but Louis didn't want it to be true.

"You left the front door open Louis," Harry whispered, obviously struggling not to break down.

"No, I-I didn't, I d-didn't-" Louis stuttered, now sobbing too hard to form an intelligent sentence. Him and Harry had given Hope a home when she was younger, three years old and left at a deserted house by a cruel pair of neighbours. Now she was nine. Six years was more than long enough to grow a strong attachment and both inside and outside Louis was falling apart.

He didn't blame Harry for doing the same. However, he definitely didn't leave the door open. He would never.

"You did, and now she's flat like a fucking pancake, out there bleeding all over the road!" (I'm sorry lovelies, that's a bit graphic)

"It's your fault Louis!" Harry's voice cracked and a fresh wave of tears rolled down his face, but Louis was too enraged at the accusation that he spared him no empathy.
Louis clenched his fists and raised onto his toes, "I didn't leave the door open! I haven't been outside since you left- you left Harry, and you left the door open! It's not my fault, it's yours!"

"You didn't go out for the mail?" Harry sniped.
Louis tripped over his words, "y-yes, fine! Okay, I got the mail, but I closed the door!"

"Bullshit, you killed her," Harry spat.

Louis couldn't do this anymore. He let out a strangled sob, tugging on the ends of his hair. He couldn't continue yelling, and he couldn't continue standing there and being yelled at for something he didn't do. He had to get away.
With that final thought he darted over to the back gate, yanking the rusty lock open.
